The process starts with the clay. I use a porcelain and a high fire stoneware clay. The pieces are one of a kind due to the placement within the kiln. The kiln is an Olsin Fastfire, with two fireboxes. It will hold approximately 100-150 pots per firing. The kiln is loaded and a small fire is started to dry out the kiln and the pots. It is then restarted in the morning and continues for 12 to 17 hours, reaching temperature needed to melt the glazes. The kiln is then left for 2-3 days to cool.
During the firing process the atmosphere moves between oxidation and reduction. This is what gives the glazed service its special effects. The spots within the glaze are from the bed of ash in the fireboxes being raked, flames then carry the ash into the kiln and it then gets deposited onto the pots. All pieces are oven proof, microwaveable and dishwasher safe.
